old churchIn 1938 a small group of believers under the unction of the Holy Spirit, started the Church which is now known as Gospel Tabernacle United Holy Church. In it's beginning was Rev. J.C. Hayes, Mother Lorena Curry, Sister Georgia Ann Vincent, Sister Bessie Vance Herbin, Sister Mary Gant, Sister Luvenia Gant, Sister Molly Gant, Sister Minnie Allison Gant, Brother Gant, and Brother Alex Gant.

The church started in the living room of Mother Curry's home, which was dedicated to holding the services. They held revivals in a tent beside Mother Curry's house. Also Rev. Lake, Pastor of Ebenezer United Church of Christ would let them hold revivals at thier Church. The Holy Spirit moved in a mighty way and souls were added to the Church. They were Brother Douglas Bowers, Sister Cleo Bowes, Brother Napoleon Gibson, Sister Frances Gibson, Brother Bill Cheeks and Sister Pearl Cheeks, Brother Charles Jenkins, and Sister Lorena Enoch.

After serveral years of fasting and praying and asking God for direction, they purchased some land with God's help and were able to build a little wooden church on the hill. People would come from all around to hear them shouting and praising God, they were called the Holy and Sancified Church. God moved in a mighty way; with healings, souls saved, and people began to joined.

Later the church was destroyed by fire and without any insurance was unable to rebuild. So, the Saint's began to pray and held on to God's unchanging hand. They had faith that God would see them through. They returned back to Mother Curry's living room to hold their services. The Rev Foster let them have service in a house in Gray Street. After praying and asking God to direct them in rebuilding the church. Mother Curry along with the Saints went to Mr. Harris Lumber Company seeking help in rebuilding the church. He agreed to build them a brick church and let them pay him on a monthly bases. Thier stedfast faith believing that God could do anything but fail stood.

As jobs situations began to cause a lot of the Saints to move up north. Leaving the membership to drop, the trails and tribulations began. A man even wanted to buy the church and turn it into a dance hall. The Rev. C.S. Stroud , Pastor of St. Mattews AME Church said, before that would happen he would make the payments himself. The members held on to Gods word, "Upon this rock I build My Church and the Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail Against It."

In 1953, the Lord called Mother Curry home. Through her many years of dedication, service, sarifice and love for the Church, she helped to bring about the beginning of Gospel Tabernacle UHC.

As time passed God poured out his blessings, even unto this day. new church
